Summer's Fab Five

Even though the season isn't technically over, that summer feeling is officially over. This summer produced the finding of new staples for my hair, new styles, new growth, and a new perspective for this blog. There was some losses as well in products, hair (check out the post on stress and hair), and jobs but it's all lessons learned.

Since I don't do official length checks, here is a little pre-summer/post-summer comparison for growth.

May 2010 Wash n Go

September 2010 Wash n Go

I would say that I grew more than an inch, but lost about half an inch. This fall I will focus more on retention than just growth. Here are the summer staples that I could not live without. Please forgive me in advance for the plethora of Shea Moisture products:

Best Co-Wash/Leave-In Conditioner: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner

This yummy smelling conditioner slid through my hair as soon as I applied it and left a long lasting softness after a co-wash.

Best for Twistouts - Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

If you're an avid reader of this blog, then I'm sure you've heard my praises of this product alllll summer. If you're not, then this product is great for softness, smell, and hold with a twistout.

Best Leave-in - Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque

This is supposed to be used for a deep conditioner, but I found it to best be used as a leave-in after a wash n go or to soften a twist-out.

Best Deep ConditionerGiovanni Smooth As Silk Xtreme Protein Hair Infusion

Left me with these results. And that's all I gotta say.

Best Shampoo - Shea Moisture Organic African Black Deep Cleansing Shampoo

Shea Moisture African Black Balancing Shampoo - 12 oz.

Recently did a product review on this great shampoo....really helped with my eczema and dandruff issues.

Honorable Mention -Sulfur8 Medicated Hair and Scalp Conditioner

Smells terrible, but again really helped me with my scalp's issues. My scalp had the best summer ever thanks to this grease.

Happy Labor Day!

Hey ladies! In lieu of Labor Day, I wanted to ask you guys a related hair question:

What is the most labor you've done while doing your hair?

My response is my graduation hair! Those mini twists that took me roughly 5 hours to do definitely took a lot of labor and patience. I left them in for two weeks and got a good amount of growth since my hair was stretched. I guess the "no pain, no gain" saying can apply to this hair situation.

You can answer on here or on Twitter and you can include pictures as well...I'll post answers tomorrow! Enjoy your day ladies!

KandyCurls Is Natural Like Me!

KandyCurls is a company that sells natural hair apparel online. Here's more info on their background:

"KandyCurls was born out of the desire to provide curly girls and natural hair women as a whole, with a wider variety of colorful and vibrant natural hair apparel. Designer Erika, a lover of fashion and all things curly, created KandyCurls initially to design t-shirts for herself when she decided to share them with the natural hair community or anyone who just likes the designs! All apparel is custom made to order and printed on American Apparel t-shirts."

Inspiring! I did an interview with Erika about the company and her own natural style...enjoy!

1. Tell us a little bit about KandyCurls
KandyCurls is a natural hair apparel company. We sell natural/curly hair designed t-shirts and tank tops. We also sell natural hair tote bags and jewelry. The shirts are girly and colorful and celebrate natural beauty.

2. Who designs the shirts and jewelry?
I design all of the shirts and jewelry myself. I do this because I was searching for natural hair t-shirt designs that were colorful and emphasized the curly texture similar to mine and so many other ladies out there with big fabulous curly hair and they didn’t exist, so I created them. As for the jewelry, I design pieces I want to wear and that are unique to me.

3. What is your favorite piece?
Oh that’s like choosing your favorite child! But I’d have to go with either “Curly and Girly” or the “Curlicious” t-shirts for now. I have a lot more ideas so we’ll see if that changes ; )

4. What are some successes and difficulties you've had in having a natural hair apparel online store?
Getting the word out! Having an online store is the easy part. Actually spreading the word about your product is the challenge.

5. How fast is the shipping process?
I make everything to order so I usually ship within 2-3 days of the initial order. I try to get it out fast!

6. What about your own hair regimen? Do you have any methods/products you stick to religiously?
I try to keep it as simple as possible. When I first stopped flat ironing my hair I bought all kinds of products (like most of us do), but now my regimen is pretty straight forward. I wash once a week and co-wash several times a week. I keep my hair in braid out’s for about half of the week and the other half I wear either my natural curls or a bun/ponytail. I usually stick to using extra virgin olive oil with a bit of jojoba oil mixed into it to seal my hair. I also use Cantu Shea Butter leave in conditioner a lot. The Cantu is great for my braid out’s and I usually add my evoo/jojoba oil mixture to it which works great for me.

7. What is some advice you would give to someone who wants to start their own online business?
Don’t give up! There will be obstacles but everything has a solution and you have to be patient, I think that is key.

8. Anything else you would like to add?
Feel free join us on facebook to be notified about sales, promotions, and new products before anyone else. The link is on the home page: http://www.kandycurls.com. Stay tuned, more designs are coming soon. Stay curly ; )
